During the month of February, it’s all about love, candy, and hearts. However, we can’t forget about the other major holiday in February, the holiday that now gets us three days off from school: President’s Day.
President’s day was originally created to celebrate George Washington’s birthday. In fact, the federal government still lists the holiday as “Washington’s Birthday”. The day it officially became a holiday was in 1885. However, the government made it official to celebrate it the third Monday of February in 1971. Eventually, they made it a national holiday to celebrate presidents and all they do for our country. The official date this year is February 19, but it is always celebrated on the third Monday of February.
Another reason we celebrate President’s Day in February is because four presidents had their birthdays in February. Those presidents were George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, William Harrison and Ronald Reagan.
So, while you’re busy buying chocolates for your valentine, make sure to honor our presidents.
