Emma Tolbert is a 7th grader that has been practicing dance since she was two years old. She dances with the Rock Company of Las Vegas.

I started off by asking her why she started dancing. Her response was, “I started dancing because when I was young I would go to my sisters dance recitals and that’s how I knew I wanted to be a competitive dancer.” After that I asked her what her favorite type or style of dancing was. Emma replied, “I can’t choose but my top two are ballet and contemporary.”

I also wanted to know if she felt it helped her health. She quickly replied, “Yes, a lot. Dancing helps me stay in shape and eat right.” Then I continued and asked, “How do you prepare for dancing?” Emma’s response was, “I do a lot of stretching, and I have to also prepare my pointe shoes and that takes a while. “ She prepares her pointe shoes by bending them and shaping them to her feet.

How often do you practice and how late does it go to?, I asked. She explained, “I have dance practice everyday and usually it goes from 4:00pm to 9:00pm.”

Emma told me that her favorite move was a tourjete. I asked her what the struggles of dancing are to her. She said, “Whenever I go to dance recitals or meets I feel I am being judged badly by all of the other people.”

The last question I asked her was if she ever wanted to quit ballet because it got so hard. Her response was, “No actually, I was always motivated to try my hardest and never give up.”

In conclusion, Emma is a very hard-working and focused girl. Dancing is her passion and she will most-likely continue it for a long time.
