Students enjoy their time making blankets for others!

Charlotte Bonney is an 8th grade student at Sig Rogich Middle School. She originally wanted to go to Cornell University, but recently opened up her mind to Harvey Mudd College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and many others. She does Girl Scouts, plays soccer, and is a member of NJHS. She joined NJHS in 7th grade after receiving her acceptance letter at the end of 6th grade. NJHS (National Junior Honor Society) has given her many opportunities to do good for her community, including the ‘Seasonal Comforts’, which she had come up with on her own.

‘Seasonal Comforts’ was an event held on Friday, September 21st, where students could come after school to the cafeteria to make blankets for others. If the students were in NJHS, this would count as service hours. “I came up with the idea for blankets because the weather has been becoming increasingly unpredictable and I wanted to help people that may not be prepared for the sudden turn in the weather,” Charlotte had stated. Autumn was just around the corner, and weather changes were about to occur, so she had the idea to make blankets for others who did not have their own.

She was able to start this event by planning everything. “Everything needed to be in place so that we had the space for the event, the time, and the blankets,” she said. Her and and her Girl Scout troops needed to purchase, transport, and store all of the blankets. Then, they had to advertise it in a way that would entice the kids. Furthermore, they had to call every place they wanted to donate to so they could set up donation dates.

At the time of the event, they taught each kid how to make the blanket. After one blanket, they were either allowed to leave, or they could stay to help make more. “It honestly really was fun. I really enjoyed it,” Milani Batiste, 8th grade. Overall, many people enjoyed the experience.

Charlotte felt proud knowing that she did something to help the community. “I also feel immensely happy because it brings me such joy to give the blankets to people and watch their faces light up,” Charlotte said. She is glad that she did such a great thing. It’s not everyday you see a girl who tries to make the world a better place.
