As of 2020, a countless amount of parents and teens have begun to ruminate on changes to make for the new decade. New Year’s resolutions have been around for what seems like an eternity, and now the typical resolution is always losing those extra pounds. Losing weight has been an enormous goal for people all around the world. There are thousands of different diets to try, but the Zone Diet is one that has always been neglected for centuries. The non-well-known diet has been lurking in the dark for ages. It is finally time to open the curtain on this interesting diet.

The Zone Diet is a specific routine that consists of eating 30% protein and 30% fat along with 40% carbs. This simple diet is allegedly supposed to reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation is supposedly why people gain weight, grow old swiftly, and become extraordinarily ill.  Thousands of years ago, people on Earth did not eat grains like pasta. In 1995, Barry Sears, the creator of this diet, started eating healthier after losing multiple family members to heart attacks. He insists this diet helps people lose weight fast, efficiently, and safely. 

Science, however, does not agree. Different scientists have said opposing things about this diet. Some say the diet is efficient while others say it is completely inaccurate. The Zone diet does help lose fat, but only because of its similarity to other diets. 

The daily meal plans include: 

  • Breakfast-Turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, and veggies
  • Lunch-Egg salad, grilled chicken and fruit
  • Afternoon Snack- half of an apple, a hard-boiled egg, and three almonds
  • Dinner-lettuce, sweet potato and grilled salmon
  • Bedtime Snack- nuts, fruit and cottage cheese

OR

Protein, low density carbohydrates, and dietary fat.

Pros VS Cons

Pros

  • The diet should be followed for a person’s entire life, and keep them young and healthy. 
  • After only a few weeks, the diet will enter you into ‘the Zone.’ 
  • ‘The Zone’ is where people will think clearly, age slower, and lose extra fat as quickly as possible.

Cons

  • The Zone Diet does not promise a dramatic, initial weight loss, but does say that people should lose about a pound or two in the first week. 
  • After this time people on the Zone Diet will have better fitting clothes and smaller waists. 
  • If people are eating the wrong carbohydrates, they might gain weight, get heart disease, and possibly develop diabetes. 
  • When on the Zone Diet, people must give up processed foods, high sugary fruits and starchy vegetables. They also have to give up coffee, tea, and soda. 

Personally, I think the diet is extremely simple and easy to follow. It seems helpful for people with a history of heart disease and people who have a hard time losing weight. Since it is a lifelong diet to follow, people can stay in shape for almost their entire life. This also keeps them healthy for the majority of their life. Instead of spending all their time at the doctor’s office, some may spend that time with loved ones.
