The 5 Bite Diet is an eating plan that was designed by Dr. Alwin Lewis and featured on the hit television show, Dr. Oz. The 5 Bight Diet is easier than some other diet since everyone can focus on the number of bites you take (5), instead of the calories one consumes. Essentially, the fewer calories you eat, the more weight you will lose. On this diet, you skip breakfast and are allowed only five bites of food at lunch and five-bites of food at dinner. You can also drink as much as you want as long as the beverages are zero calories. This diet does not come at any cost, allowing you to eat anything you want freely. However, supplements are advised, since this diet is very low in nutrition, which can come costly when bought often.

In the 5 bite diet, there is no specific meal you have to eat. However, since the 5 bite diet is not very nutritious, experts claim the foods high in protein are advised such as meat, chicken, fish/seafood, eggs, dairy, tofu, tempeh, seitan, legumes like beans, and peas. To help prevent nutrient deficiencies, the 5 Bite Diet also addresses the importance of taking a multivitamin and omega-3 supplement each day. However, there is no specific research done on this diet plan, there are obvious pros and cons.

Of course, to every diet, there are the pros and the cons. In the case of the 5 bite diet, the cons clearly outweigh the pros.

Pros:

  • The 5 Bite Diet has a very easy rule.
  • It is inexpensive considering you can eat whatever you want.
  • The program lets you eat any food you want, preventing the feelings for people wanting to quit the diet.
  • The 5 Bite Diet is proved to lose 15 pounds a week for people who try the diet.

Cons:

  • The 5 Bite Diet is not a long term diet and is not designed to be. Once you reached your goal weight you must go back to your normal eating habits.
  • The University of Colorado at Boulder explains that you’ll gain back any weight loss if you stop the program, just like any other diets.
  • With just 10 bites of food per day, you’ll also be hard-pressed to take in the many nutrients your body needs.
  • According to Colombia University very-low-calorie diets like the 5 Bite Diet can cause nutritional deficiencies, which can lead to anemia, bone loss, decreased cognitive function, low energy, and other serious conditions.
  • Although the diet asks for vitamin supplements, the supplements aren’t enough to fill in occasional nutritional gaps.

Long-term effects of the 5 Bite Diet

Although the 5 Bite Diet may be a good solution to lose weight very quickly, the long-term effects come with a cost. Consistently consuming fewer calories than your body requires, can lead to muscle loss, essentially leading to a slower metabolism. Therefore, slower metabolism makes it difficult to maintain the weight you’ve lost and increases the risk for you to regain the weight over time

My opinion the 5 Bite Diet

The 5 bite diet is proven to work and is a very fast way to lose weight instantly. Although the 5 Bite Diet is very effective, I believe it shouldn’t be a way to lose weight. There are many other ways to lose weight healthily, such as exercising and eating vegetables or other nutritious items. In addition, even with the instant results, thinking long-term effects this diet may not be right for you.
